Hurricanes are the most violent storms the earth produces. A hurricane needs warm ocean water combined with wind in order to develop into monster storms like Irma and Andrew. For Atlantic hurricanes, winds coming from Africa provide that necessary ingredient. The wind passes over the warm Atlantic waters and turns into gas vapor which rises. As it rises, the vapor cools and and forms large cumulonimbus clouds. From this point the storm goes through four stages. The first stage is the Tropical Disturbance, followed by the Tropical Depression. The third stage is the Tropical Storm followed by the final stage, a Tropical Cyclone. https://scijinks.gov/hurricane/
The key ingredient to the formation of these storms is warm water. Our oceans are warming. According to the IPCC 5th Assessment Report( Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), “Since 1955, over 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases has been stored in the oceans”. A very small fraction of the earth’s thermal energy warms the atmosphere. Therefore humans “only feel a sliver of the true warming cost of fossil fuel emissions”. http://www.oceanscientists.org/index.php/topics/ocean-warming.
Hurricane Irma’s winds in the Atlantic were the highest ever recorded. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/09/09/us/hurricane-irma-records.html This article from the New York Times compares Irma with the all of the Category 3 hurricanes in the last 50 years.
But people in the fossil fuel industry want to maintain control over energy in the world. So Trump continues on the climate denial path. He denies that man is causing the warming of the oceans. He eliminated the scientists who could show proof of climate change. He is eliminating the EPA so that the U.S. will be a bigger contributor to global warming. Everyone who disagrees with him is removed from the government. He is making his ignorant followers believe that there is no such thing as climate change. It’s Fake News. For Trump fossil fuel is green ($) energy, no matter what it costs this country and the world.
We must keep up the pressure on Trump. We must try to make that soulless man feel the pain of our citizens in Florida and Texas and the world.
